The Beara Peninsula is a must for the discerning shore Angler to discover. There are hundreds of spots to try that are quite accessible to the average Angler. Alongside that there are 23 designated Shore Angling venues that are signposted and are safe to use with lifebelts and safety railings at each site, some of them are also concreted into a flat platform for your comfort. The joy of these is that hardly anyone fishes from them so even in the height of summer you are very likely to be fishing completely on your own. There are maps available locally showing each designated venue and also the species that you are likely to catch from them. Bait collecting is good with Peeler crabs available as are Lugworm, razor fish and of course there is a never ending supply of Mackerel from the shore during June, July August and September. In winter Sea Bass provide some excellent sport on light spinning gear and Pollack are still around then as well. I have caught mackerel of the shore well into December. Good Bull Huss fishing is to had at several marks that are easily accessible. We have had our first Gilthead bream from the shore in 2006 & 2007and also a Sting Ray of 8lb was landed at Ballydonegan beach. Trigger fish are becoming more and more prolific with good numbers, an impromptu angling trip in September 2007 yielded over 60 fish to four rods of of one shore mark to the west of the peninsula. Bait and Tackle can also be purchased in Castletownbere at Martin Sullivans, Main Street. Tel: 027 70167 or at Limar Marine by the main fishing pier. Tel: 027 70830 All methods of Angling are good here (I have tried them all apart from the fly fishing) and you are likely to pick up at least half a dozen species a day from most marks. Guided Shore Angling Days can be provided at a cost of €125 per day not including tackle and Rod's and reels. If you don't wish to avail of this and you are staying in our cottages, I will happily view a map with you and point out some marks and methods used when there. |
